The Geography Bee

While Joshua & Hailey were playing basketball, Hunter was concentrating on the Geography Bee. Sollars Elementary participates in the National Geographic Geography Bee each year. Hunter was one of the 3 finalist from 6th grade to make the finals for the school this year. There were three rounds that he had to compete in to determined who would be the final winner and go on to the next level which would compete against all of the DOD's schools here in the Pacific. That winner would then go to Washington and compete their nationally. There were a total of 8 finalist from 4th to 6th grade. Hunter won the first two rounds and got an automatic in to the final round. The final round came down to him and a 5th grade girl who barely escaped being able to advance to the final round. In her round it took 30 minutes to determine who would go up against Hunter. Oh it took forever! Finally, the final round started. They were each asked 3 questions. The girl won the first question, both attempted the second question and missed it. The third question, she couldn't answer and passed on it. Hunter answered it and would have gotten it right if they were asking for the name of the island Cuba and not the name of the civilization that resided on the island of Cuba back in 750 A.D. He misunderstood the question. He did ask them to repeat the question, but said afterwards, he knew he was in the ballpark but wasn't 100% sure so he guessed. We both don't remember the actual question and how it was worded but he did know he could have answered it either way. So he guessed Cuba. The final answer was the Aztec Civilization. I have to say I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was very nerve racking but a proud moment to hear his classmates cheer his name and to see him excel in a subject area he loves. History of any short has always been interest of his. For coming in second place, he won a $15.00 gift card from the Base Exchange, 1 free movie pass, and 1 free meal from the food court. (I do have pictures coming)

HUNTER I bet you will win next year. PaPa will give you a few spelling words to study and help to make you smarter. I am saving newspaper articles for you on the Wright Brothers. Maybe next year there will be questions about airplanes. I love you and miss you so much. Grammy Barbie
